Bishop Leroy Dingan Jones was the eighth child born to Josephine Blacknell and Louis Jones, who proceeded him in death, on January 8, 1951, in Washington, DC. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Southern Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Murden Appling in Washington, DC. Leroy attended the District of Columbia Public Schools and was known for his collegiate abilities.
He showed an affinity to music at an early age and took a particular interest in the saxophone. Leroy was known for serenading the neighbors with his musical abilities. He graduated from McKinley Technical High School in Washington, DC. In addition to his love for the saxophone, Leroy also enjoyed “tickling the ivories” and reveled in his ability to play the piano. When he was not perfecting his musical abilities, Leroy enjoyed listening to music, during his quiet time, and James Brown was one of his favorite artists. Building race cars was also another one of his interests. Leroy was indeed the “fun” uncle and truly enjoyed doing various activities with his nieces and nephews.
Leroy joined the United States Marine Corps early on and proved to be an exceptional marksman. While stationed at Camp Lejeune, Leroy met and married the love of his life, Fannie Lee. Together they celebrated over 43 years of marriage. Although he had traveled throughout the country and world, he decided to put down his roots in Maple Hill, North Carolina.
Leroy will forever be remembered by his devoted wife Fannie Jones of Maple Hill, NC. His children Darby James, Zirus James, Sachiko Cleveland , Stacy Jones, Kameko Howell and Tosheba George. One brother, Theodore Jones and loving sisters, Sadie Dent-Jones and Bernice Byrd; beloved treasured grandchildren, great-grandchildren and best friend James “Pig” Phillips along with countless other friends and family whom were blessed to know him.
