Obituary

Earl Hughes Jr. was born April 23, 1960, in Washington, D.C., to Earl Hughes Sr. and the late Annette Alston.  Earl Hughes Sr. and Annette Alston married in June 1959.  Out of their union, they had 2 children.  Earl Hughes Jr. was the first child of 10 children on his father’s side and the fifth child of 13 children on his mother’s side.  He was educated in Washington County School System.  Earl Hughes Jr. and Lesley Parker married on June 18, 2010.  Together they mentored and raised 2 teenage children and 1 grandchild.  Earl was a great mentor, father figure, and friend to many of our nephews and nieces; he would help them in any way he could.  He was respected and truly loved by those who came in contact with him.

Earl was a certified, professional cook specializing in several different cuisines.  He found great pleasure in helping the homeless and the elderly.  He chose a career path doing both things that he truly loved, cooking and the helping the elderly because he wanted to provide good, nutritious meals for them.  He would also prepare meals and feed the homeless in his spare time.

Bro. Earl Hughes (affectionately known by his church family) was a faithful member of the Mt. Hebron Apostolic Temple #3.  He was baptized in Jesus name and on August 25, 2011 he received the precious gift of the Holy Ghost and began working out his own salvation with fear and trembling.  He served as the Superintendent of the Sunday School Department and loved working in the church.

Earl is survived by his wife, Lesley Hughes; three children; Earl Hughes III, Rufus Wiley Jr., and Sequoia Wiley; his father, Earl Hughes Sr.; eighteen brothers and sisters: Anthony Hughes, Cecil Alston, Walter Hughes, Patsy Kittrell, Sonia Hughes, Andre Haynie, Valerie Hughes, Roosevelt Jefferson, Demetris Hughes, Annette Simons, Katina Hughes, Kevin Jefferson, Shelly Hughes, Eugene Jefferson, Tyson Hughes, Hughes Mark Jefferson, Brandon Hughes, and Denise Jefferson; six grandchildren; many aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and a host of other family and friends.  He was preceded in death by his two siblings; Marie Smith and Wayne Alston.
