James Melvin Murphy was born on May 30, 1948, to the late Rev. William A. Murphy and Ida A. Murphy of Burgaw, NC. He peacefully transitioned from labor to reward on Sunday, February 28, 2021, in his sleep at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center. “Melk”, as he was affectionately called, attended C.F. Pope High School and later graduated from Job Corps.
He worked for Lewis Nursey for years, then moved to New York. After returning home he worked at a restaurant and continued in the farming industry. He enjoyed working in his garden faithfully until his health declined. James joined Lakes Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Atkinson NC early in life. Being raised by a Pastor, he was grounded in his Bible and knew the word. James loved to have fun shooting pool and spending time with his family, especially his nieces and nephews. His laugh and jokes would always create a happy atmosphere. He knew everybody and who he did not know he would get to know.
James was a loving uncle, brother, brother-in-law, cousin, and friend to everyone in the community and who knew him.
He leaves to cherish his memories, two sisters: Mittie Hayes (Wilbert) of Atkinson, NC, Rena Bowen (Ralph) of Burgaw, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
