James Howard Reid, 83, departed this earth on Thursday, May 30, 2024. He was born on November 22, 1940, in Weldon, North Carolina to the late Preness Portis and the late Virginia Reid. He grew up and attended school in Halifax County where he met and married his sweetheart, Ethelene Anthony. After starting their family, they left North Carolina and moved to New York City where they continued to grow their family and raise their children.
James also known as “Jimmy” or “Dada” and “Papa” to his grandchildren was a hard-working man and a great provider; he did not believe in taking a day off work. He worked for many years as a truck driver before retiring from the trucking industry. After he retired, he continued to work odd jobs to provide for his family.
Anyone who knew James would know that he loved himself a good ‘ole game of cards. He was a skilled player; poker was his favorite! And whatever you did, do not let him catch you cheating while you played with him. He took his game of cards very serious, so unless you wanted to feel his wrath, Do NOT cheat! To relax, James could often be found fishing at a lake or a pond, as he was an enthusiastic fisherman.
James enjoyed the last four years of his life in Burgaw, North Carolina with his daughter, Jennifer and her siblings: Lisa and Alphonzo Bland. They took the best of care of “Papa” until the end.
