Janice Lorane Boney Newkirk born August 22, 1950 in Burgaw, North Carolina, entered into rest on January 26, 2016. Janice was the only child of Florence Virginia Boney.
Janice lost her mother, Florence, in a fire when she was just an infant. She was reared by her father, Mr. Robert Cherry and her paternal grandmother, Mrs. Minnie Cherry in the Friendship community of Rocky Point, North Carolina. She attended the renowned Rosenwald School, Pender County Training School in Rocky Point.
Janice lost, Mrs. Cherry, the woman whom she had known as mother for all of her young life, also in a fire. After the lost of Mrs. Cherry, Janice went to live with her maternal grandparents, James Edward and Callie Bell Boney in the Twin Oaks community of Burgaw, North Carolina. She was the apple of Callie Bell's eye and Callie Bell affectionately called her "Jenny Roo".
Janice married Mr. Virese Newkirk, who preceded her in death, two months prior to her demise. Throughout her marriage, she was a loving, faithful, kind, good, gentle, peaceful, longsuffering wife. Paul calls these attributes in Galatians 5:22-23, "the fruit of the spirit". This fruit, along with Janice's career as a Certified Nursing Assistant was instrumental in the years that she had to serve as her disabled husband's caregiver in their home. She chose this task, even when others tried to advise her differently. She never felt that she could trust his care to anyone outside of the home.
Janice accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined Pike Creek Missionary Baptist Church and retained her membership there.
Janice, through her husband's inspiration, joined the Eastern Star Order in the 90's. After several years as an Eastern Star, she became Supreme Noble Commandress and served the order diligently throughout the term of her reign.
