Mr. Larry Darnell Newkirk departed his life quietly and peacefully on Wednesday, April 27, 2022, at Vidant Health, Greenville, NC. “Big” as we called him, was the son of the late Virgil Newkirk, Sr., and the late Beatrice Powers Newkirk. He was born on January 22, 1951, in Duplin County, NC.
He attended Duplin County Public Schools and was a member of Adoram Baptist Church. After growing up and leaving home, he met and married Joyce Ann Mathis, and to this union was born three lovely children, two boys and one girl. relatives and friends; along with the staff at Bobby’s Alignment shop, Piggly Wiggly and Jif-A-Mart, all of whom he loved deeply. Larry was a loving father, quiet, sympathetic and ready to lend a helping hand whenever needed. His hobbies were horses, race cars and spending time with family.
“Big” was a very hard-working young man who had many jobs in life. He worked for over forty years as a farmer with Rawls Farm Service of Watha, NC in his younger life; then from there, he worked for Murray Cranes Service and after which at Coastal Concrete Pumping for many years thus retiring from this job. In addition to his parents, Larry was also preceded in death by his wife: Joyce Ann Newkirk; one son: Larry Newkirk and one sister: Ella Mae Newkirk.
He leaves to mourn his loss: one son, Alonzo Newkirk, Sr. of Wallace, NC; one daughter, Pearlleana Newkirk Robinson of Wallace, NC; one sister: Rita Farrior of Wallace, NC; one brother, Virgil Newkirk, Jr. (Shirley) of Wallace, NC; four grandchildren: Na’Kiyah Newkirk, Nautica Newkirk; Alonzo Newkirk, Jr. and Alexis Newkirk; two great-grandchildren; two aunts: Annie Lois Williams of Willard, NC and Carolyn Powers of Wallace, NC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other
