Melinda Lacy Underwood

Burgaw-Melinda Lacy Underwood, beloved wife, pet groomer, and friend passed peacefully at Lower Cape Fear Hospice on June 29, 2025, in Wilmington NC.

Melinda was born in Manahawkin, NJ, on June 18, 1962 to the late Robert James Gatton and Joan Hartman Gatton.  Melinda lived a life defined by kindness, selflessness, and a boundless love for others. Melinda and her husband Daniel lived in Burgaw.

She was known for her generosity, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Whether it was feeding strangers, offering shelter, or rescuing dogs in need of a home, Melinda’s heart was as big as her spirit.

Melinda lived life to the fullest, finding joy in simple pleasures and sharing those moments with friends and family. She loved fishing, attending races, and camping under the stars. Her laughter, warmth, and sense of adventure were infectious to all who knew her.

For 23 years, Melinda was the loving and devoted wife of Daniel Underwood. Together, they shared a bond that transcended time, built on mutual respect, laughter, and a deep love for each other.

Melinda’s legacy will live on in the hearts of her family and friends and in the countless lives she touched with her kindness and generosity. Though she may no longer walk among us, her memory will forever inspire us to be kind, to love without reservation, and to live fully in every moment.

Rest in peace, Melinda. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
