Melvin Farland Sr was born to the late James Tony Farland and Winnie Dixon Farland on April 11, 1945 in Duplin County. He Departed this earthly life peacefully on Tuesday, October 29, 2019.
The funeral will be 10 am Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at the Middle District Baptist Association on hwy 53 in Burgaw. Military honors will follow in the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery 110 Montford Landing Rd. in Jacksonville, NC at 2 pm on Wednesday . A visitation will be from 4 until 7 on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at Christian Chapel #1 on hwy 50 in Rose Hill, NC.
Melvin was educated in the Duplin County Public Schools System and graduated from Charity High School, Rose Hill, NC in the Class of 1963. He furthered his education and received a Certificate of Achievement from Coastal Carolina Community College School of Continuing Education - Wastewater Treatment Course in November 1972. His church affiliations were at St. Louis Missionary Baptist Church in Chinquapin, NC and Christian Chapel #1 in Rose Hill, NC. He served as Deacon, Trustee and Sunday School Superintendent. He was also a Mason. Melvin proudly served in the United States Navy from February 3, 1964 to February 2,1968 and the US Navy Reserves from February 2, 1968 to February 2, 1970. While serving he earned several Medals decorations: National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and Good Conduct Medal 1st Award for Service.
Melvin leaves to cherish his precious memories: Wife: Earnestine Scarborough Farland of the home Two Sons: Melvin S. Farland, Jr., MD. of Virginia Beach, VA and Valentine Farland, of Roanoke, VA. One Daughter: Penny L Farland, Rose Hill, NC. Numerous grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
