Roy Wilmer Norris Dorsey Sr. was born on June 6, 1934 in Avondale, Maryland to
the late Rainey Francis Dorsey Sr. and Katherine Squirrel Dorsey. Roy departed this
life on February 16, 2015 at the New Hanover Regional Medical Center in
Wilmington, North Carolina with his wife Helen by his side, as she always was.
He was educated through the Carroll County School System. He loved adventure as a
young man and joined a travelling circus for a few years. He married his one and only
true love Helen on September 26, 1953. To this union nine children were born.
Three infant sons preceded him in death.
Roy worked as a professional long distance truck driver for over 35 years. He lived
in New Jersey and Florida before moving to Watha, North Carolina. He established a
church home wherever he lived. He was currently attending Mount Pleasant
Holiness Church.
Roy sang in various church choirs and gospel groups during his lifetime. This love of
singing for the Lord led him to join his beloved Brothers in Christ acappella gospel
group. He enjoyed giving his all to God through his singing, even at times when it was
even difficult to breathe. He loved his “Brothers” in the group dearly, trying to
make every practice and singing commitment through out his illness.
Roy enjoyed travelling the open road with Helen by his side. Visiting places in and
outside the USA, such as Africa, Spain and Bahamas. He enjoyed all family
gatherings, cooking, eating Italian sausages “with green peppers and onions”, Texas
wieners, fixing anything with an engine (especially lawn mowers). He enjoyed
laughing, music and talking about his life experiences with his family and friends.
Always giving words of wisdom and encouragement to all. Most of all Roy enjoyed
his wife Helen, taking care and providing for her, their home, his family members and
friends. Roy always put God first in his life and made everyone feel comfortable and
welcome at his home.
Roy was a humble, kind man who truly loved his Nana (Helen). Roy “Popi” to his
family and friends would give all that he could whenever he could.
To cherish his memory he leaves his wife of 61 years, Helen Bernice Dorsey, his
children, Roy Dorsey, Jr. (Carolyn) of Williamsport, Maryland, Gale Lawrence
(Nathaniel) of Wilmington, North Carolina, Wayne Dorsey (Theresa) of Riveria
Beach, Florida, Daniel Dorsey (Franchesca) of West Palm Beach, Florida, Aldora
Thompson (Michael) of Piscatawa, New Jersey, Fonda Robe (Wilbur) of Wallace,
North Carolina, Brothers Rainey, Roland, Calvin (Mary), Robert (Betty) and Glen and
1 sister Anna. 20 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins,
relatives and friends. Special thanks to Gabby, Lonnie and Roy Anthony for looking
after Popi and Nana.
